Automotive Tint Law Overview

Laws regarding the tinting of automotive windows vary from region to region and country to country. These laws are an important influence on our industry and will eventually have a lasting influence on your business. Fortunately, complying with these laws decreases risk and increases reward, making legal tinting a good business decision.

Illegal tinting increases your business risk in many ways. The most obvious risk is that you are making the local police aware of you. You may be subject to investigation or sting operations resulting in serious fines and penalties. You risk losing referrals from previously satisfied customers when police ticket them for illegal tinting. You create greater risk for the entire industry. People who enforce the law know people who write the laws. Lack of cooperation with police will lead to stricter laws, which hurt everyone. Tinting legally reduces risk.

Working within the boundaries of the tinting laws also brings reward. The reduction of risk as discussed above increases the value and ensures the continuity of your business. If you only tint legal, you can:

  • Participate in industry associations
  • Work with car retailers who can’t afford to have illegal tinting
  • Be more comfortable when officials visit your shop
  • Gives you confidence to speak with lawmakers, with respect to changes in the law
  • Apply for work with police departments and other government agencies, should a contract be announced in your area
  • Increased referrals and connections though out your community

These rewards and community involvement are available to companies that stay within the boundaries of their regional tint laws.

Reduced risk and increased reward are usually primary goals of a business owner. Legal tinting brings both and is a simple « insurance » to increase your success. Risk reduction is not easy, it must be in your DNA to rise above the competition, and do things for all the right reasons. Not stooping to the lowest common denominator.

Admittedly, there are many distractions when trying to run your business in a legal and professional manner. The biggest distraction of all is when your competition thinks nothing of the illegality of their actions, without concern for the long term consequences. You need to be better than that, and in the long run you will be a company still in business, after the others go the way of all others with questionable business practices and ethics.

  • Shipments can be effected via UPS
  • UPS 2nd Day Air, UPS Next Day Air and UPS Saturday Delivery is available at the corresponding UPS rates
  • *All returned orders are subject to pay shipping charges
  • Will Call is only available at our Carson, CA facility
  • Free Ground freight on orders over $1,000.00

Sales Tax

Sales tax will be charged in starts where applicable unless a valid resale certificate is on file with us.

Custom Cuts and Roll Down Fee

Custom width cuts available at no charge if the cut is not a standard width we sell. Cutting tolerance on special width cuts are +/- 1″. Special width cuts are not returnable.

Automotive short rolls are available in 50ft increments ($20 surcharge). Flat Glass and Security short rolls are available in 25ft increments ($20 surcharge). Security film of 11 & 12 mil available in 50′ and 100′ only.

RETURN POLICY

There are several possible scenarios which may lead to the return of film:

  • You didn’t like the film. You try one of our films for the first time and after tinting one car or few windows, you decide you don’t like that particular film.

    SOLUTION: We have unused film picked up by a shipping courier. We credit you for the full 100 foot roll if there is at least 75 linear feet left on the roll. If there is less, we credit for the actual footage returned.
  • The wrong film was ordered. You ordered the wrong film or lost the job after you ordered the film.

    SOLUTION: Refuse the shipment when it arrives at your door. If the film was already delivered, you are responsible to return the film via the courier of your choice. When the film is returned to our warehouse, we will credit your account for the returned product.
  • The wrong film was delivered or you received a defective roll. We made a mistake and shipped you the wrong film. You notice the film is defective and cannot be used.

    SOLUTION: We promptly send you the correct film. The replacement roll is billed to you upon shipment in the same manner as regular shipments. We will issue a pick-up for the unwanted film. When the returned film is received, we issue a credit in your account for future purchases.

    This return process is generally complete within 5 to 10 business days.
  • You’ve decided not to use our film. You choose to return film that has been in your inventory for any reason other than a specific quality problem.

    SOLUTION: We are happy to take back any film in good condition within 3 months of the original purchase date. You will be credited based on the amount of film we will be able to resell (measured in 25ft increments). A 20% restocking fee will be charged on film returned after 6 months.

Web Store

We have web stores available to all of our dealers, as long as you made a purchase in the past 6 months. Sign up at www.johnsonwindowfilms.com/dealer, the web stores allows dealers to access their account and place order 24/7. From time to time we have web specials, where you can get film, tools and sales support materials below normal selling price.

Warranty Policies

Warranties vary per region on all products; contact the local distribution center in your area for more details. Automotive laws vary from state to state and country to country, warranties are only honored on installations within the legal limits of your given area.

If warranty credit is available in your area, the amount of labor credit is significantly greater than the original purchase cost of the film. These credits are not intended to provide the dealer with additional profits, but to cover any actual costs involved in the rework.

All orders shipped are subject to The Netherlands value added tax unless a valid VAT number is on file.
